The MIFF Schools films give young people an insight into other cultures and ways of life through cinema. As well as supporting the teaching and learning of a specific language and its culture(s), the films can be powerful authentic resources to develop young peoples’ general intercultural understanding.
Intercultural Understanding is now a part of the curriculum in most schools and is a Capability in the Victorian Curriculum across all learning areas. A class visit to a MIFF Schools screening provides the ideal opportunity for students to reflect upon their personal relationship with other cultures. The process of discussing, analysing and learning about film with students creates meaningful links across the curriculum, develops critical and creative thinking, fosters a life-long appreciation of film and encourages intercultural understanding.
To enhance teachers’ work with their students, the MLTAV and MIFF are pleased to have collaborated on the development of four teacher webinars, conducted by Film and Language Methodology experts, to provide valuable film and target Language insights as well as tips and links to implementation of the new Victorian Curriculum. The webinars will support teachers to discuss the film with students prior to attending a MIFF Schools screening, as well as inform classroom follow-up.
Please consider booking for a film, even if it’s not in the Language(s) you are teaching. We also encourage you to consider participating in the FREE online webinars.
Bookings from MLTAV member schools are eligible to send one teacher per ten students at no charge.
